Libraries

Washington and Lee has three libraries, two on undergraduate campus and one at the Law School. These libraries offer more than just books, with available research assistance, technology, access to online resources, and more. The University Library collection include over 725,000 volumes, thousands of periodicals (both print and electronic), microforms, videos, music, and selected print and electronic newspapers.

Libraries are open 24/7 to W&L students, faculty and staff when classes are in session. The general public is welcome between 6:00am and 10:00pm throughout the week. For more exact schedules for all three libraries, please view the library hours.

Leyburn Library

Located in the center of campus, Leyburn Library is the main source for all your undergraduate library needs, including:

  • The loan of books, films, digital cameras, laptops, and presentation hardware
  • Interlibrary Loan requests
  • Research assistance
  • Support with preparing presentations
  • Creating and printing academic posters
  • Digitizing/editing audio and video, using scanners, and editing digital images
  • Analyzing data sets
  • Coffee, other hot and cold drinks, and snacks

On the main floor of Leyburn, any students who experience computer malfunction, need repairs, or have questions about using new programs or software can get help at ITS. ITS services are free use for all students.

The lower levels have carrels, special study spaces that all students can rent, as well as locked studies for students working on honors theses.

Leyburn Library is also home to Special Collections, which houses W&L's rare books, manuscripts, specialized local history and University historic materials. These materials are available for viewing by all students and are often used in projects, coursework and research.

Telford Library

The Telford Science Library is located inside the Science Center, next door to Leyburn Library. Telford is a specialized library which offered special resource and research materials for the science disciplines. In addition, Telford offers special study carrels for students who want to study inside the Science Center.

Law Library

Across campus, the Law Library provides services to the law students, but is also open to undergraduate students. In additional to special resources specifically geared towards the study of law, such as archives, journals, and access to online reference, they also offer research assistance, reservable study spaces, document requests, and interlibrary loans.

The Law Library's Scholarly Commons repository preserves the scholarship, publications, historical documents, and selected records of the law school and makes them available to the public.
